Democracy and Greece's Golden Age


1) direct democracy- a form of government in which citizens rule directly and not through representatives

classical art- their values. of harmony, order, balance, and proportion became the standard

tragedy- a serious drama. about common themes such as love, hate, war, or betrayal.

comedy- contained scenes filled with slapstick situations and crude humor

Peloponnesian war- war lasting from 431 to 404 BC, in which Athens and its allies were defeated by Sparta and its allies

philosopher-a thinker who uses logic and reason to investigate the nature if the universe, human society, and mortality

Socrates- he believed that absolute standards did exist fro truth and justice and encouraged geeks to go farther and question themselves and their moral character.

Plato- a student of Socrates, who set forth. his vision of a perfectly governed society

Aristotle- philosopher that questioned the nature of the world and human belief, thoughts, and knowledge.

2) The greatest impact one of Pericles' goals I think would be to strengthen Athenian democracy. He. increased the number of paid officials who were in office, and direct democracy was introduced which caused other city-states to practice this style of government.

3) He increased the number of public officials who were paid in salaries and introduced direct democracy.

4) Pericles strategy was to avoid land battles with the spartan army and wait for opportunity to strike Sparta and its allies from the sea.

5) They didn't understand that there could be so much more out in the world because they were so used to being told what to believe and not thinking for themselves.
